Thank You for Changing the Sticker for Me

作者:Irina

★ Artist’s Statement

This is a true story about a moment when I felt understood.

During a health examination for new students, I took out my Health Insurance ID without saying anything. When the staff member saw me, they voluntarily reprinted the form and sticker for me, simply so that the gender marker on the form would match my gender identity.

I was worried that I might have caused them trouble, but their words—“This is who you are, isn’t it?”—deeply moved me.

Living as transgender people in contemporary society is difficult. While my friends are kind, the inconvenience and frustration caused by institutional discrimination and collective failures to recognize us remain stressful.

The unexpected kindness I experienced that day made me believe that there are still people within institutions who are willing to stand up for transgender people and help them live with dignity.

★ Comment from the Judge│Chih-Chieh Chien

Using a first-person perspective and animation, this work tells the story of the artist encountering a kind medical staff member at school who voluntarily changed the gender marker to match the person’s identity.

Through a very straightforward narrative, this real-life story offers a positive example. Faced with a large and complicated system, people do not necessarily have to accept its rules.

If each person is willing to make a small act of resistance, it may be possible to create small spaces to breathe within a much larger structure of oppression, and to experience a little kindness.

However, the work also leaves us with a different question: what happens when the system is designed to prevent manual changes? Even if individual staff members are well-intentioned, how then can they prevent the structural harm caused by misgendering?
