Everyone Shares Transgender Struggles

★ Artist’s Statement

I am a transgender person preparing to start life on my own, and I want to move about mainstream society in my own way.

Gradually, I realized that while adhering to societal expectations can be a way to protect myself, it does not shelter me from all risks. I am still willing to adapt to my surroundings, to understand this world, to avoid unnecessary provocations.

But I also want to preserve who I am.

Because in the end, I realized that it is not only transgender people who struggle. Everyone is trying to become a version of themselves that can be “accepted” by others.

★ Comment from the Judge│Pan-Chen Lo

This work presents everyday transgender experiences from the shoes of a middle-aged worker, connecting them with workplace challenges that many people can relate to.

At the beginning, the protagonist carefully shaves, dresses up for a private night out, and later changes into comfortable clothes at home. But when stepping into the workplace, the character is forced to hide any authentic gender expression, even accepting a manager’s further demands.

This back-and-forth reveals the harsh reality of the professional world: crossing gender boundaries is not simply a matter of confidence or aesthetics. It is also part of the struggles that all of us may face as we earn a living under the current economic system.

Although this theme and approach are relatively common in transgender audiovisual works (managing one’s appearance, fashion choices, and personal narratives), this work is striking for returning agency to the subject and for documenting a real experience.

I hope that transgender people in different professions will continue to make art, to tell their stories, and to leave their marks on this world.
