Happy Graduation

★ Introduction

This film serves as our graduation wishes to a younger schoolmate, as well as a documentation of the school life of a transgender student.

For most people, their high school experiences may be something boring or taken for granted, but transgender students must often put in twice as much effort to maintain this ordinary quotidian.

To protect her gender identity, our schoolmate once elected to be her homeroom’s college applications officer, in order to control how her personal information was presented. The topic of gender-inclusive bathrooms, fitness exams in PE class, these seemingly trivial matters were heavy challenges she had to weigh over again and again.

But she was also someone who enjoyed telling dad jokes. She discussed social issues with friends, shared personal stories with the teachers she trusted, and was one of the most hardworking students I have ever met. With a passion for classical literature, she worked hard toward her dream of becoming a Chinese language teacher.

Like every other student, she is a youth with her own adventures, dreams, and doubts. The way she lived through high school with warmth and kindness toward others was, to us, incredibly brave.

We sincerely hope that she can continue to live freely throughout the rest of her life.

Congratulations on your graduation!

★ Comment from the Judge│Wu Xiaole

This work is a precious message from a group of senior students to a younger graduate.

The film begins with capturing her unusual interest in reciting classical Chinese literature. Rather than immediately focusing on the “minority” experience of being transgender, it first establishes an even more “marginal” personal interest.

After this deliberate build-up, her transgender identity gradually emerges. Bathroom breaks, routes to the toilet, and PE class are brought into the story one after another. These are all delicate issues today, but because the film integrates them concretely into the character’s surroundings and everyday life, they are no longer mere abstract debates.

Notably, the senior students eventually appear on camera themselves. This softens the subtle power dynamic between the people filming and the person being filmed, while also responding to the theme of the work: a heartfelt wish for a better future, and nothing less than a collective effort.
